Teaching Assessment (DELTA)

5.2.Monitoring
The monitoring process will depend on various factors
including the trainee, the course, the employer and
whatever National Standards are being used alongside
the format of the training and whether it is based for the
most part in a learning organisation or in the workplace.
Other factors may include whether the employer location
is readily accessible geographically to the assessor.
There are two aspects to the monitoring process;
monitoring by the employer or employer-based mentor
and monitoring by the learning organisation who are carrying out assessment and internal verification.
Employer / mentor monitoring will likely be organic in that it will happen naturally during the working day if
the correct mentors are sourced and relationships are built. Key elements to consider to develop and
successfully monitor a trainee from a mentor perspective include:
● The interpersonal relationships between the mentor and the trainee.
● The skills of the mentor and their ability to both transfer those skills to the trainee and to also discuss
and correct any errors the trainee may make.
● The skills of the mentor to be able to communicate progress and potential issues back to the teacher
in the learning organisation.
To ensure each of the three relevant parties are fully
aware of expectations, the development of a
communication plan is recommended to ensure time is
set aside at regular intervals for monitoring discussions
between mentor and trainee, trainee and learning
organisation, and learning organisation and mentor.
Only by ensuring that lines of the communication are
clear and unobstructed will all parties successfully
communicate to the benefit of the trainee.
