Work-Based Learning and
Teaching Assessment (DELTA)

Trainee Assessment is vital to continued positive relations between the learning organisation and the host
company and more importantly, ensuring that the trainee's learning journey and pathway is as effective,
efficient and successful as possible. Methods and routes towards assessment will vary according to the
occupation and can also be different across regions and countries therefore it is imperative that the
employer ensures the specific requirements through discussion with the VET organisation before
progressing to the initial steps.
5.1.Assessments Overview
Prior to any training opportunity in a host company, it is imperative that the training and learning outcomes
are detailed and agreed between the host company, the trainee and the training organisation as discussed
in the previous chapter. These outcomes should obviously be aligned to any relevant qualification
authorities if there is to be a formal qualification and recognition element at the end of the training
programme. Only when all parties are in complete agreement and understanding, should the training
programme commence.
Whilst formal assessment may be required at the end of the trainee's journey, it is best practice to carry out
intermediary assessments throughout the process in order to ensure the learning outcomes are being met
and any deficiencies can be identified and addressed as soon as possible.
UK Government guidelines (2014) now require that:
* There is a singular approach to assessment and assessment
strategy for each relevant occupation
* There is some element of synoptic, end-of-learning assessment
and Either the assessment or part of it, is graded

These guidelines link into the key principles of high-quality learning that:
• An assessment must assess what is meant to be assessed
• Each industry or occupation should have a single standard to ensure fair assessment, and
• Assessments must be fair to each trainee and provide an equal opportunity to demonstrate
competence
