Developing Expertise in
Work-Based Learning and
Teaching Assessment (DELTA)

To have a suitable place for the learner to take their breaks and eat lunch will contribute to the wellbeing of
the learner and will ensure that he/she gets some time to relax and “recharge the batteries” to be able to
learn efficiently during the whole day. These facilities should include access to drinking water and the
possibility to prepare a warm meal. They should also, just like the workshop, have a suitable temperature
and be adequately ventilated.
Not establishing the following work environment criteria, could mean that the learners are less likely to be
successful in their learning, as the success of good vocational training is not only based on the commitment
of the learner.
Tip: Organize a good learning environment
The company is the ideal learning environment to impart technical skills in a real social setting. The
workplace mentor possesses knowledge regarding the requirements and rules that are applicable within the
industry. From the very first minute when a new learner arrives at work the mentor clarifies aspects and
rules regarding occupational health and safety. He or she explains why protective equipment must be used
and motivates the new learner to do so and get into the habit of good practice. Communication is another
subject to highlight for successful learning outcomes. Good communication supports the development of
the learner to the highest possible level and prepares them to meet the demands for knowledge and skills.
Diagram of a good learning environment
for learners in the workplace: Tips:
• Provide enough time and space for the learner
to practise and repeat what he/she has learned.
• Promote and stretch the learner.
• Transfer autonomous work tasks to generate
confidence.
• Provide the learner with social and general
professional skills.
• Consider the suggestions of the learner.
• Provide recommendations and preparations
for the first day in the company, e.g. information
folder.
• Prepare a checklist as a guideline for the first
day in the company, e.g. contact persons,
instructions, operating schedule, introduction of
the employees, etc.
• Provide information about generally binding
behaviour standards of the employees in the
company.
